Is Superman in Gliese 581c? Print E-mail
Tuesday, 04 March 2008

You know what, the discovery of earth-like planet Gliese 581c really makes me interested. I will not continue discussing whether there is life in that planet, however I will relate it with the discovery of a new mineral matching kryptonite unique chemistry (sodium lithium boron silicate hydroxide). It is not a serious article, but it's still interesting to discuss.

I know some readers may ask what's the relationship between the Gliese 581c with the discovery of kryptonite matching mineral. I would say that we can start by finding kryptonite term from Superman story, a fiction superhero created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

Superman was born in a planet called Krypton. The planet orbiting in a red solar system  far away from Earth. Someday, not long after Superman (actually, his real name is Kal-El) was born, the planet exploded. Fortunately, his parents have prepared a spaceship to send Kal-El to Earth.

According to the story, Kal-El becomes a strong man after arrived to Earth and affected by Earth's yellow solar radiation. As previously explained, Krypton was orbiting in a red solar system. The yellow solar radiation makes him strong as steel and lightens his body so he can fly like a bird. However, he will become weak if there is kryptonite near him. Kryptonite is part of Krypton rocks and makes Superman's power back to what he was in Krypton, weak and powerless.

The discovery of planet orbiting in a red solar system called Gliese 581 or red dwarf solar and a new mineral matching with kryptonite composition is so close. The newly discovered planet's characteristic location reminds me of Krypton that also orbits in a red solar system. And even though the appearance of this new mineral is completely different with the comic version, both composition are similar. Is it just a coincidence? Well at least if there is evil human life in Gliese 581c, we already have the kryptonite (or should I call it "gliesonite"?).
